Mary Upchurch
Mary Upchurch was a hardworking lady who through all of her sacrifices, determination and perseverance made a better life for children and herself.
Born in rural Mississippi on September 18th, 1934, she found herself divorced with six children at the tender age of 28. She barely had an education, no qualifications or child support and 7 mouths to feed. She did what needed to be done to make ends meet, at times even working three jobs.
Sunday lunch was her sacred time to connect with her children around the table with a home cooked meal. Under her watchful eyes, she made sure that they had enough to eat, went to school, did their homework, and stayed out of trouble. She moved her family to Atlanta in the 1970’s from Alabama for better job opportunities.
Her devotion to her children, her belief in God, and the love of her children made her never give up or lose hope. She took pride in her children and became the beloved Granny to her grandchildren. Mary passed away on June 8, 2014
